The Overlooked Benefactor

pierce garnett allenThere’s a downside, if you want to call it that, to being the quiet professional.

People tend to forget about you.

Everyone wants to focus on what the Kevin Garnett trade means to Paul Pierce… which is valid.  It’s the big C’s story in today’s Herald… and frankly, we should be concerned about the mind state of all three of our stars.

Which brings us to Ray Allen.  Being the guy he is, Ray grugingly accepted his trade from Seattle to Boston.  He no doubt thought he was making a lateral move to Eastern Conference purgatory.  But he didn’t raise a stink.  He swallowed hard, smiled, and decided to make the best of it.  Then Kevin Garnett showed up.

Suddenly, Ray is on the contender.  Today, the Seattle Times looks at where Ray was… which is the content star on a bad team… and where he is now.

“I was very content with where I was,” Allen said. “Sometimes, contentment brings upon mediocrity. You have to be careful of that in sports. Sometimes, you’ve got to shake it up.”

“Let that be a lesson to any young player in the NBA,” Allen said. “Anybody can be traded. You have to go about playing the same way, no matter where you’re at, no matter what situation you’re in.

“Things can change. I can be disappointed about getting traded, but it’s a job. One day, I’ll be retired, and I can laugh about the bad stuff that I stressed over. I can say it helped me become a man.”
