I’m back from my covert assignment on the West coast. And I must ask this; how can a city covered in sunshine be full of dim-witted sports fans? Much to my dismay, a majority of Lakers fans still believe Kobe is ‘da man.” One fan (Billy from Sully’s Tavern in Torrance, CA) was stunned when I not-so-subtly informed him that I would not trade Paul Pierce for the most divisive, selfish player in the history of the NBA. They refuse to acknowledge the Celtics as legitimate contenders, falling back on the ole’ “it’s still early” line of defense. That won’t work when the C’s are 20-5. They still fault Shaq for the Lakers demise, and believe Phil Jackson is a great coach. They all worship at the mighty shrine called USC. They despise the notion that two East coast guys (Boston’s Frank McCourt and New York’s Joe Torre) run the Dodgers. They HATE the Patriots, and I mean HATE. (I know, I shouldn’t put any stock in the opinions of a fan base which cannot support a professional football team.) They have luke-warm feelings for our beloved Red Sox (I couldn’t find a single die-hard Angels fan), but will turn once the Sox win another World Series. Chalk this up to East Coast Envy. At least you have the weather. So take your bleach-blonde bimbo, walk down to the beach and play some vollyeball, because your sports teams ain’t worth your time. And here’s a shout-out to Fat Face Fenner’s Fishack in Hermosa Beach (a great Boston sports bar in enemy territory)…..that was some damn good chowda and fried scallops.
