Doc Rivers is the NBA’s Eastern Conference Coach of the Month.
The Celtics are 14 and 2. It makes total sense. But Doc Rivers is no different than he was last year. He’s still the same guy. The only difference between Doc Rivers now, and Doc Rivers then, is the guys filling the jerseys sitting next to him on the bench.
This isn’t a knock on Doc Rivers. Actually, it’s a way to show everyone that last year wasn’t his fault. Hell… look at Minnesota. They’re 2-13… with most of the players that Doc had last year.
So yeah, it’s easy to be Coach of the Month when you can throw KG, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce out there for 30+ minutes a game. Calling for Posey off the bench isn’t brain surgery, either. House has worked out nicely, and Doc has done a good job with how he uses certain guys in certain situations. And when you’re heading up the best team in the league, you should win this award. As they say… it’s easy to be a good coach when you’ve got good players. Maybe now we can retroactively believe the players who said “we didn’t run it the way Doc drew it up” last year.

I’m still undecided on how good of a coach Doc is, although I’m starting to buy the argument that he isn’t a rookie’s coach, he’s a veteran’s coach. I do know one thing though, he’s a class act–articulate, an all-around nice guy and it seems like guys want to win for him. He’s the polar opposite of Isiah Thomas. Someone had to be the scapegoat for last season’s disaster, and it was him. But if this season continues the way it has, he and Ainge will have cleared their names.
