The Laundry Is Piling Up

Rob Gill is the Red’s Army version of the 5th Beatle.  There were many nights that involved Rob, Chuck and me shirking work-related responsibilities to engage in hours-long discussions about sports and hot-button issues like “would you rather have power of invisibility, the power to teleport, or the power to time travel?” (Personally, I lean towards teleporting.)

We’ve been begging Rob from day one to grace the pages of Red’s Army with his unique perspective on things.  Now… after the years of begging, promises (both financial and otherwise… don’t ask)… Rob has acquiesced.  Thanks Rob for your first RedsArmy.com exlcusive:  The Laundry is Piling Up:

Excuse me while I pull out my dentures, plop them on the end table and sit forward in my wicker rocking chair for some hard core old man-style grousing.  More than ever, the NBA and its fellow major professional sports leagues have turned rooting for teams into the sports cliché du jour: “rooting for laundry.”  We’ve heard for the last few weeks about how “exciting” the NBA playoffs figure to be in light of the blockbuster moves made across the league.  Bona fide stars and even surefire first ballot Hall of Famers have been sloughed off of rosters by teams going nowhere in order to beef up powerhouses as they prepare for potential runs at a title.

By the way… those of you who thought that whole introduction was a thinly veiled attempt to make Rob feel bad for waiting forever to make his first contribution… congratulations.  Hopefully, we’ll shame him into a few more pieces.

  1. Great article the days of loyalty by players and owners are long gone. Its to bad. Today the thinking is one player can come in and make a difference and that is true. However one player or two may not win a chapionship.

  2. One of Red Auerbach’s greatest moves was trading for Robert Parish… another was acquiring Dennis Johnson… and those guys are considered true Celtics. Hell… DJ won a ring with Seattle.

Trades are part of the game. Becoming “Celtics” comes with time… and hopefully… titles.

  3. KG looks like he’s belonged in a Celtic Uniform his entire Career! The Green suits him perfect!

  4. But who’s the 5th Ceatle?

  5. I knew it would take a Ceatle reference to lure JTB out onto the front-page.

Interesting stuff Rob. I had similar thoughts over the summer when we were debating whether to trade the young ones. It would have meant more to win one with Delonte, Big Al and crew…. but just not realistic. The only way to get a ring, was to get KG. The only way to get KG, was to get Ray Allen. This happened perfectly, and that’s why I ultimately think that complaining about it is foolish.

Let’s remember that a few years ago, even last year, the big names in the league rarely changed places. Hence the dubbing of the NBA as the No Balls Association. These monster trades certainly help the game as a whole, and will win back many casual fans come May and June. So there are certainly positives to this trend as well.
