Isiah Thomas ruins everything he touches. If Jesus could turn water into wine… Zeke turns it into arsenic and poisons everyone at the party.
But I am not a fan of the New York Knicks… so I have taken great delight in watching him mortgage the teams future by taking on huge contracts and trading away all of its draft picks.
Sadly… today… Isiah Thomas lost that job. He’s been replaced by Donnie Walsh in the front office.
So now, Zeke is only the coach of the NY Knicks… which is a real shame. Don’t get me wrong… he’s a crappy coach… but he won’t have the long-term effects that he can impose as the team President.
But its not like Zeke and Walsh don’t have a history together. Walsh hired Isiah to coach the Pacers… and gave him full control of their draft. The results went about as well as you can expect:
The consensus in the Indiana Pacers’ draft war room in late June 2002 was to take Tayshaun Prince, the long-armed Kentucky star who was expected to be available when the Pacers were making the 14th pick.
Prince was the unanimous choice – until the team’s top basketball executive, Donnie Walsh, announced that he was allowing his head coach, Isiah Thomas, to take control of the draft. Weeks earlier, Thomas had settled on Oregon guard Fred Jones after watching him in the pre-draft camp in Chicago. When it came time to make the pick, Walsh stunned his subordinates when he said, “I’ll let the coach make the decision.”
I can only hope Walsh doesn’t learn from his mistakes… or catches whatever spell Thomas casts over people to make them forget that he has colossally ruined almost every one of his endeavors. The sad thing is… is that I expect Walsh to fire Isiah and start fresh. Then I might actually have to face the possibility of the Knicks becoming *gulp*…. a decent team.
Walsh is a great move by the Knicks brass. I’ll miss seeing Isiah’s smirk while he runs the franchise into the ground.
