Paul’s First Pitch

This is part of the pregame celebration of the Boston Celtics World Championship (I’ll NEVER get tired of writing that).  It starts with the team sprinting out of the center field doors… then there’s Paul Pierce whipping a pitch that would have been 3 feet over Big Papi’s head… and then the guys all head into the clubhouse to continue drinking. (Here’s a good clip of how that looked from the crows…. and Here’s a clip of the duckboats driving around the field in the pouring rain)

Some observations:  These guys were flat out giddy.  I know those were grown men… but what makes this whole thing so awesome is that they’re acting like any of us would act out there.  They were jumping around… laughing and joking… being goofy.

And all of that… all of the legitimate joy and celebration… makes this championship more special (at least to me).  The Sox were almost more relieved than anything… and the Pats were following the lead of stoic Bill Belichick.  The C’s, however, are acting like happy little kids out there… and I love it.  It is sports after all… and they’re enjoying the hell out of the moment.

Then again… a lot of those guys were probably drunk (did anyone hear KG’s interview from the pre-party?  Definitely buzzed.  Someone get that clip onto YouTube.. STAT!)… so that probably helped

  1. Hey guys Ive been reading all yr and it has been a joy. Im a 23 yr old fan from Panama and have been following them since 92 (which was hard with no internet) and to win this One was just a blessing Im incredibly proud to be a Celtic, ppl have been congratulating me all week cuz they know how much I love the team.

Just wanted to let you know that Paul Pierce will be on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Wednesday which should be interesting since Kimmel is a Lakers fan.

    Keep up the phenomenal work,

    Lets go for 18!!

  2. GREAT clip of the Celts at Fenway – gotta love Wyc keeping up behind Lucky with the trophy held high overhead. The guy’s worth like 9 figures and he’s running like a kid after an ice cream truck.

Class act Sox – nicely done. Hopefully the Celts can pay you back come early November.

  3. Bad news, leprechaun lovers. The next Laker dynasty is imminent. In fact, if Bynum didn’t get hurt, it would have started a week ago. After the Lakers win the next 3 titles, this championship the Celts bought will be forgotten. Sorry.

  4. YES! Let the dilusional Lakers fans begin their trash talk.

Hey, Doug, do you think Bynum was enough of a difference to win this title? Really?? Keep dreaming buddy.

  5. I wonder what Varitek was thinking when Paul came charging on to the field, called himself safe at second, started bouncing up and down all over the pitcher’s mound, and then shook off a couple signs. Then he throws the ball as hard as he can. Great to see all the players enjoying themselves so much, just like you said. Have you ever seen anyone have such a good time throwing out a first pitch. Most people just try not to screw it up and don’t even reach the plate. Paul throws the fastball. Excellent stuff from the captain.

  6. I didn’t see it… but I guess Pierce actually slid into second. At about the :52 mark.. you see him dusting off his pants. When he gets onto the mound, he’s still looking down at his pants and warmup.. and at 1:41 you can see the ground crew way in the background re-grooming the area Pierce messed up.

I also love Ray and Poz laughing at him as he gets ready to throw. Mike Lowell seemed to be enjoying it too.

  7. I love how much of a brotherhood there is among the big three teams here in Titletown. Not sure what it’s like in other big sports towns but you gotta love the way the guys in one sport come out and support guys from another. Of course, it helps when a Boston team wins a championship just about every year this decade.

  8. Redsarmy, to answer your question: yes. A healthy Bynum would’ve been more than enough to begin a Laker run of 3 or more titles. The critics couldn’t get enough of saying how ’soft’ the Lakers were and how they lacked defense. You don’t think a 7′1″, 290-pound, shot-blocking, 12-rebounding, 18-point-scoring CENTER helps there? What’s gonna happen when Gasol has the luxury of playing his true position, forward? That’s not dElusional.

  9. But if that doesn’t convince you, throwing a whole mess of improving youth and perhaps an off-season acquisition or two.

  10. I’ll point you to the regular season game in which Perk OWNED Bynum. And this means you would have been counting on Lamar Odom to cover Pierce.

Look… this series wasn’t even close… one role player wouldn’t have made a difference.

  11. Doug, you are still delusional. Perk ate Bynum up both times they played this year, and will do it again next year. Don’t get to high on a player who’s played maybe 30 decent games, if you’re counting on him to be your savior next year…you’re delusional.

And the luxury of having Gasoft at power…I mean SOFT forward, means KG destroys him again. That’s IF they make the Finals, which I don’t think they will. Rondo will now own any point guard the fakers want to throw at him. Pierce vs. Odom, that makes me laugh. And Ill take Ray making shots over the Kobe bricks. Plus, the flaker bench is not really that good. They’ve been exposed, and the West teams will play better against them.

Rondo will be the best point guard in the Eastern Conference next season. Billups will be his only competition, if he is still with the Pistons. And top 5 in the league.

  12. Where Rajon fits in the PG ranks intrigues me. He’s definitely top 10, but from there it’s hard to say. He’s got competition from Deron Williams, Paul, Parker, Nash, Billups and you can’t leave out Iverson, Baron Davis or Kidd. Rajon still needs to work on his jumper and his decision-making, but with his youth, defense, rebounding and pass-first mentality, I’d take him over anyone else in the league right now.

  13. Good call Bill. I always forget about Parker and Baron, and I consider AI a shooting guard. But I take Rondo over Kidd and Billups.

So I say top 6: CP3, Nash, Parker, Deron, Baron and then Rondo. And all these guards are western conference except Billups. 3rd year starting PG with a championship under his belt? Im voting for 4 Celtics all-stars next year. Maybe 5? Other than Dwight Howard, which center would you want from the Eastern conference? Dalambert, Z?

    OK, I guess I’m a Celtics fan.

  14. Perk ‘owned’ Bynum? Well, a lot of guys ‘owned’ Kobe when he was 19, too. But youth (LAL) gets better and age (BOS) declines. I don’t make the rules, that’s just how it goes. You know that.

  15. Ainge has a nose for talent in the draft. Assuming he can be smart about the trade/free agent market, I don’t see Boston moving away from their position of vast superiority and strength anytime soon. Winning a championship gives momentum (unless you’re Miami), money and increased visibility in the trade/free agent market. So if Danny plays his cards right, the Celtics can continue to dominate in the coming years.
