Everyone was shocked when Baron Davis left 17-plus million on the table with the Warriors. And then Elton Brand opted out of HIS deal… but left zero doubt that he was coming back. But when he does, Baron Davis will be his teammate.
The Beard will take less money to play with the Clippers.
speculation quickly began that the team would try to keep Brand and sign Davis. This scenario is only possible if the Clippers renounce the rights of Corey Maggette and Brand takes a slight pay cut.
Sources say the Clippers are expected to do just that and quickly reach a verbal agreement to bring back Brand.
So the Maggette era in LA is over… but so too should be the rumors of him coming to Boston. He’ll get more than MLE (or at the very least, the full MLE) from someone and we just won’t do that here. And since LA will renounce his rights, there’s no more talk of a sign-and-trade. I’d expect Maggette to go to Philly.
Josh Smith is Phili’s first choice. But if he goes back to ATL I could see Phili tossing most of there 11 mill at him.
Also heard rumors of Phili making a move at Elton Brand. Obviously that won’t happen. But it does let you know that they desperately need a PF, more so than a shooting guard.

Says Phili isn’t interested in Maggette. I say most likely is a sign-and-trade with Orlando.
Aside from the money, this deal makes no sense to me if I were Baron Davis. It’s not as if he wasn’t on a contender before…

Isn’t Davis invested in movies too? I know Brand is.
Question, why can’t they sign-and-trade Maggette then re-sign Brand. He’s their free agent, don’t they hold his bird rights? They only even need early bird rights since he’s taking a pay cut anyway.
They’ve renounced Maggette. To the best of my knowledge, he’s no one’s free agent now. I’m pretty sure that eliminates any sign-and-trade possibilities.
Davis is a perfect fit in L.A. I figured he’d end up here sooner or later, just SO glad it wasn’t for the Flakers. This should be the best Clipper team of all time (which isn’t saying much).
But I do frequent a few Clip games each year so it will be nice to go and see a good game instead of just going to see LeBron, T-Mac, the Celts or whatever other visiting superstar I need to see on the cheap (Flaker tix are so overly-priced!). I’m just hoping for a Clips sweep of the KoMe’s next season, just keep the embarassment train rolling.
Could the Celts take a chance on Livingston?
except philly already has andre and thad young at that position so im not sure why they would want to overpay maggette when they clearly have no real shot of winning a title during his prime
i think that philly has enough players that can’t shoot (like their whole team) to sign josh smith, if i were them id save their money for a worthwhile investment
Ok… I’m wrong.. but there’s a catch:
The Clips renounced Maggette… which mean they gave up his Bird rights and his salary no longer counts against their cap. He’s now a free agent subject to the rules of any other free agent… i.e…. they can only sign him with whatever cap room they have. A sign and trade IS still possible… but it can only be done with the cap room available.
So if I’m not mistaken (and I clearly have been)… it seems like this is LA’s plan:
Renounce Maggette to clear the room to sign Baron. Work the deal out with Brand to re-sign… since he’s got Bird rights… they can work out whatever sign-and-trade deal with Maggette… bring in another piece to the puzzle… and THEN re-sign Brand.
ESPN latest on this Situation:
“Maggette is the big loser in Davis’ decision to opt out. The Clippers will have to renounce his rights to clear enough cap room to sign both Davis and Brand. That means Maggette won’t be able to work a sign-and-trade.
Instead he’s got to hope that the Sixers, Warriors or Grizzlies offer him a deal for bigger than the midlevel exception. If they don’t, he may be forced to settle for a deal starting at $5.5 million — a $1.5 million pay cut from what he was due next year. Ouch.”
Which now makes it very understandable why the celtics offered up a contract to Maggette. Banking on the idea that he may not get more money elsewhere, why not play for a ring? Danny, Danny, Danny, you work in mysterious ways.
Wow now I can definitely see Maggette in a celtic uniform Baron Davis just smack the NBA world with a new face that anything can happen in this free agent market. And about Maggette the Spurs are the front runners in the Maggette race take a look I expect the flippers to be 8th spot team now in the West

well.. I just read through the CBA language and it made it seem like renounced players can be subject to sign and trades… but they no longer have Bird rights. So as long as any sign and trade is done before the cap space is eaten up by Elton Brand…. it seems like Corey can get the $7 mil he was going to make.
Spurs adding Maggette could be scary for the West as well, along with these Clippers making moves. I love being in the East haha From the looks of it the Spurs are pretty serious about signing this kid, but don’t underestimate the powers of Danny Ainge
I would hate to be a GM in the West right now. You’ve got so many teams close enough to feel like they’re going to “go for it”… but so many of them are going to be disappointed.
I love what the Blazers are doing… acquiring good young talent to build sustained quality. They’re going to start leapfrogging a lot of these other teams… soon.
If I were Corey and had no shot at getting more than MLE I’d come to Boston. The road to the Finals are to be had in this Conference. Out West each and every year will be a crap shoot. Learn from KG and follow in Jesus’ footsteps and find your way to Red’s court. For there is gold to be found out East… Championship gold!!!
