Corey Maggette?

Corey Maggette

In a move that I don’t think anyone of us saw coming, the Celtics have offered a contract to former Clippers guard Corey Maggette. Here’s the latest on Maggette and James Posey from the Globe:

The Celtics have made contract offers to two forwards: Their own free agent, James Posey, and Clippers free agent Corey Maggette, sources told the Boston Globe. The most the Celtics could offer is the mid-level exception (about $5.8 million), and it’s doubtful that they could sign both players. The terms of the offers were not disclosed.

Maggette averaged 22 points and 5 rebounds last season. He opted out of a contract that was going to pay him $7 million next season. I’m assuming Maggette is hoping for a ton more money that what the Celtics offered. According to SI.com’s Chris Mannix, Maggette butted heads with Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy who apparently questioned his commitment to defense.

In other news, the rookies made an appearance today in Waltham.

  1. do i believe Maggette will be in a C’s uni no but who knows anything can happen but he can’t expect a ton of money only Memphis and 76ers have enough money to offer Corey,Brand, and Baron the kind of money they want. If they C’s are in the race for Maggette then I think they are right behind Orlando cause i heard the Magic are making a hard push for Corey

  2. there no D in Corey Maggette

  3. The only way I see Posey and Maggette suiting up for the Celts next year is if they deal Ray Allen. I love Ray but I would not hesitate to swing that deal if they can.

Tony Allen is gone because I believe Giddens (sorry if I butchered his name) is the real deal. He was projected as a lottery pick until the off the court stuff caught up with him. This kid will surprise many people. He is very much like Tony Allen athletically and defensively but can shoot from the outside and is more explosive in the paint.

  4. There aint no “D” in Maggette but there is a “T” as in Thibodeau!! Ray Allen didn’t play D until he came to the Celtics. I think if Maggette comes he fully understands that he will have no choice to make that a part of his game. He will find out soon enough that if you cannot play D for Doc your behind is on the pine.

  5. Maggette makes absolutely no sense to offer a contract to, I am completely puzzled. The reason he is leaving the clippers is because he feels he is a starter and dunleavy would not start him. He would not be a starter on our team either and would make less money? Makes no sense

  6. Why the hell would Maggette want to come here?

I’ve always liked his game, but to me he seems like a slightly better Ricky Davis. And he made 7 million last year, and had a career year, why would he take a pay cut to become a bench player?

    But, in danny i trust.

  7. Maggette might come here and be one of those players that is willing to take less money to come to a storied winning organization. Do you think? I think so. I mean why wouldn’t he want to win a ring? If he wants to, this is where he needs to come. BRING ON RING #18.

  8. Yes, but he also is a guy who averaged 22 ppg last year. Nobody on the C’s last year averaged 20. Posey averaged 7.8 ppg the year before he came to the C’s. Completely different players… different skill sets.

Not to say that it couldn’t work, I just doubt it.

Anyways, isn’t Orlando a perfect fit for him? And isn’t he a perfect fit for Orlando?

  9. He’ll be offensive option number 3 in Orlando – behind Lewis and Howard – so I’m not sure why he’s a perfect fit there. Maybe the Maggette offer was a way of putting pressure on Posey….in other words…take this offer James before someone else does.

  10. Marc Spears is reporting that the C’s are working on some sort of sign and trade with Ray and Magette. I’m not sure how I feel about this but in Danny I trust I guess.

  11. thats terrible, you could get much better value than corey maggette for ray ray, why break up the big three now?

  12. Don’t worry Celts fans, I read the same report and there is absolutely NOTHING on trading Ray. I’d rather have Ray than Maggette. i duno where you got that report, but that’s wrong.

  13. CHUCK: maybe because Orlando desperately needs a shooting guard? Maurice Evans and Keith Bogans split the shooting guard minutes last year. You go with a lineup of Nelson Maggette Lewis Turkoglu and Howard and you immediately leap past the Pistons and become the top competition to the C’s in the east.
And you might want to check your depth chart there in Orlando, last year Hedo Turkoglu was option number one last year, not Lewis or Howard.

Does that clear things up for you?

  14. Maggette is a clear upgrade over Bogans and Evans. The Nelson-Maggette-Lewis-Turkoglu-Howard lineup is nasty. Can Orlando afford him, though? I wouldn’t think they’d be able to go much higher than the MLE after breaking the bank for Rashard last year.

  15. That’s the thing, I guess, with Maggette. Really the only teams that can offer him more than the MLE are Phili and LAC. Phili has the cap space, and the Clips now have to choose between Brand and Maggette, seeing as they just signed Baron Davis to a 5-year 65 million dollar deal. I’m guessing they go with Brand.

  16. Who wouldn’t like this. Maggette is younger and a better offensive player. He can also pick up D from the coaching staff. That way if he comes there were be no offensive woes for the second unit. Posey is good, Maggette is better

  17. http://www.duelingcouches.com and we are huge fans

  18. He certainly can shoot, and I think he has the physical tools to be a good defender (with coaching and peer encouragement (KG)). If he truly is interested in a reduced by more focused role on a championship caliber team (with an easier road to the finals than any western team), I think he could be a steal.
I bet he’ll have the energy for defense if his minutes drop from 35 a night to 25 or so.
Does a sign-and-trade guy have to be dealt alone, or could we resign Poz with the MLE and then turn TA, Scal and our 2013 (or whenever) 1st pick into Maggette (with extension)? There’s no way we’re not the favorites if Poz comes back and we add Maggette.

Also, if he isn’t interested in defense, Golden State has cap room now that Davis has joined the Clippers, though if I were their management I’d be targeting Josh Smith. There were rumors about Maggette to Phoenix, though I think those have died down.

  19. it was a sign and trade that would send barbosa to LA for maggette

  20. i just saw a report that has G green going to the mavs

i wish him the best and hope he doesn’t get engulfed in any josh howard related activities

  21. Corey to C’s would work mate! Have him coming off the bench and our offense will never give up. Also should we have any injuries to our big three we’d have a true replacement. Lastly if it’s a multi-year deal we could move Ray Ray to bench and resign him in 2010 to end his career here in Boston as a key bench contributor.

Lastly premier scorers can become great defenders in our system. If we kept our current roster as is two seasons from now the big three could be broken down from scrambling so hard and getting older.

So Corey it’s time to live Ubuntu! Take a little less money and become our Manu understanding that soon you will be starting again (and with some jewelry to boot).

  22. Wow…Tim-Fire Doc (you must be feeling pretty stupid with that as your nickname) I didn’t know you were so knowledgeable about the Magic. So if Maggette goes to Orlando he will be option number 5..behind all those guys you listed…on the 4th best team in the East? Sounds like a great move….

  23. Chuck, they were the 3 seed last year…. how would they drop to 4th by adding Corey Maggette, with the Pistons future uncertain and getting older. And, saying he’d be the 5th option is just, well, how can I put it….. stupid?

Little known fact, when I originally created my account, I meant the type HIRE DOC. As you can see, the H and the F are very close on the keyboard.

  24. So Maggette over Posey? No way. Maggette has better offensive talent, but the Celtics have enough firepower. And Corey can be a problem and not a team player, while Posey gives the team a hug every game. I’ll take the defensive player, since that win championships.

  25. So if you HAD to pick one at five years length you’d take Poze? If the money is the same (and only the MLE mind you) then Ainge should roll the dice with Maggette. It’s like draft night; take the best talent available.

I love Posey and 48 hours ago I couldn’t imagine us not resigning him. But 48 hours ago there wasn’t a bargain basement opportunity for a guy like Corey.

Now as the length of contract shrinks I prefer Bag Game James because I know exactly what we’re getting…
