Maggette Offer Might Have Ended Posey’s Time In Green

The Corey Maggette offer came out of left field.  We’re assuming the Celtics made the offer as insurance against James Posey leaving… but the Posey camp clearly didn’t appreciate it.  Here’s the latest from Hoopsworld:

Corey Maggette has told people that he has narrowed his list down to two main suitors – The San Antonio Spurs and the Boston Celtics. Maggette has not made a final decision and will not likely announce a decision until after July 9th, when teams can officially start spending cap money. Maggette may be a fall back option for the Warriors and the 76ers, although both seem unlikely, but Corey’s camp is not going to commit to a Mid Level Exception deal until all the cap space dries up. There is also a remote chance that the Clippers could broker a sign-and-trade deal with Corey so he is holding the line. If push comes to shove and Mid Level is all Corey can get, the Spurs are indeed the front runners. The Boston Celtics may have tipped their hand too early with James Posey, when news of contact with Corey Maggette surfaced, Posey’s camp got on the offensive opening talks with a number of interested teams including the Lakers. Sources close to the situation say if Boston does not come with a full boat (5-year) deal at the Mid Level, James has that from other teams. Posey wants to win, and loves his Boston teammates, but at this point in his career he’s won two championships and it’s more about money. Posey is not going to a lottery team, but with Cleveland, Houston and Lakers all standing with open arms, Boston has a tough decision to make; is there really room on the roster and on the salary cap for both Maggette and Posey?

I’m starting to get the feeling that Posey’s a one-and-done guy.  As much as I REALLY want The Mongoose back… I understand a guy like him going for some cash.  He’s got his rings… he’s never been a max guy… so a few extra million makes a big difference for him.

  1. why the hell are the celtics working out darius miles? and why are they calling his workouts impressive, sounds bad to me

  2. I put ZERO stock in that report (meaning the impressive part of it). They’re gonna say everyone looks impressive.

  3. I used to call him the most overrated player of all time because he was supposed to be KG-esque when he got in the league, but he did actually have a very productive season the year before he got hurt.

  4. HAPPY 4TH OF JULY CELTICS FANS!

The Celts should just give PoZ the five years he wants. I know he’s getting older and a 3-year offer would be the smarter move from the front office. BUT I would rather see atleast one more championship over that 5 year span than possibly zero. I believe PoZ is that important.

The Big 3 won’t be here forever anyway, and you could probably package PoZ in his last year as an expiring contract too-so it would be a 4-year offer. Plus Scal’s contract gone next season? Renegotiating Ray’s contract in 2010, and maybe Paul’s (although we’ll need to resign Rondo)?

The Mongoose is the best free-agent in the NBA for this team. Pay him. Please.

  5. Now that Corey seems likely to not wind up here and Poze is in ultimatum mode you may have a point Bleed. If we were to give 5 years MLE to one I would go with Corey but it sounds like there’s too many variables now. If we miss out on both that would be disastrous.

  6. Uh Oh Maggette-O’s
