Shocker: Rondo Will Return

Danny Ainge says the Celtics will exercise the $2 million option in Rajon Rondo’s contract for the 2009-10 season and they will do it before this season starts.

“It makes me feel good, they still want me,” said the 22-year-old Rondo, who averaged 10.6 points, 5.1 assists, and 1.7 steals in 29.9 minutes per game last season. “It feels good to know that someone still wants you.”

Still want you? That might be an understatement. Why wouldn’t the Celtics want  a guy who eventually is going to be one of the top 5 point guards in the league? Now that we got the love out of the way, let’s talk business. Rondo’s agent is already pushing for a long-term deal, but the number of years and money will depend a lot on how Rajon progresses this year.

Unfortunately, due to the ignorance of Ken Rosenthal at Fox Sports, the issue of racism in sports is once again a hot topic in Boston. Mr. Rosenthal felt the need to point out how “white” the Red Sox are. In a nutshell, he raises the issue, yet doesn’t accuse the ownership of racism, but says the low number of black players could affect how prospective free-agents view the team. What? Not surprisingly, he contradicts himself several times throughout the article.

This is an issue we’ve danced around a few times here on Red’s Army. While the topic was discussed this morning on Opie & Anthony, a caller from NH said Tim Duncan has a no-trade to Boston clause in his contract and insinuated it was due to Boston’s racist rep. Has anyone heard this? Ignorance is an ugly, ugly thing.

Read Rosenthal’s column…and tell us what you think.

  3. I think the article is ridiculous< Do people still think Boston is racist, we just want to win championships, we are hungry, and if a white guy is better than a black guy we will play him, if the black guy is better than he will play. There is way too much money involved now for racism to be a factor, its terrible in many ways because its not like the problem is solved because yeah there are still racist people, but the idea of winning and revenue is way more important to people now. I just wish he had wrote an article about free agents or trades, not all that bullshit about race. Maybe i’m just being ignorant, or I hope that people are better than they were before. I just think its all about winning now, across the board

  4. False report on Duncan having no trade clause. Kobe Bryant is the only current NBA player that has a no trade clause (with exception to Devon George) in his contract. Duncan never had such a thing.

  5. The low number of black players could be improved if major league teams spent as much money on baseball programs here as they do in other places like the dominican republic. Why not get kids in American cities playing? Obviously because it is not cheap enough for them. I don’t think the Red Sox will have a problem attracting free agents though. As long as they will dish out the money, players will come. The most unattractive thing about the roster would be having to deal with people like Youkilis and Papelbon. For the same money I would go elsewhere not to have to deal with those kinds of personalities. I believe it is one of the reasons Manny wanted out. The Red Sox need more guys like Mike Greenwell, Jon Valentin, and Troy O’Leary. I loved those teams. Can’t stand these recent Theo made teams. I don’t even care that the other guys did not win, I liked those players so much more.
