Good To Go

At this point.. if we don’t see much of Kevin Garnett tonight… it will be because Doc Rivers is being very careful (which I’m not opposed to, by the way).  KG says… he’s ready:

“I’ve been shooting, been doing light running.  Over this last week, I’ve been working on being explosive, dunking the ball, playing with a lot more energy and getting back to my style of play.”

If KG is ready… then he’s ready… and we should put him out there… even if its limited minutes.  This is a big trip for the Celtics.  For the people who STILL have questions… this is the trip that will answer them.  Games against Denver, Golden State, Phoenix, Portland and the Clippers will be our last real proving ground until the playoffs.

And I just want to address this here:  Bob Ryan makes a case about the dunk contest that plenty of people are making:

Well, sure Dwight Howard is creative. Great. Has anyone noticed that he’s 7-feet tall?  It makes a difference.  In a better, saner world, no one over that 6-6/6-7ish range could enter a dunk contest. Period.  It’s that simple. I was more impressed with Gerald Green. Love that cupcake thing.

Green is 6’8″.  Howard is 6’11”.  3 inches didn’t make the difference in that contest.  The fact that his dunks were better and more creative made the difference.  You tell me one dunk in there that Howard pulled off because he had 3 inches on Gerald.  And furthermore, how many 7 footers jump like Howard?  It’s not like Tim Duncan can do that.  Shaq could never do those things.  Let’s just appreciate what we saw, huh?  Good performance from both guys… Dwight was better.

  1. Bob Ryan is wrong. If anything, Howard’s height hurts him in a dunk contest. Much harder to keep those long limbs under control.

  2. The most impressive dunk Howard did was his first. Every other one was either not a dunk or nothing to write home about. The one where he hangs the ball on the smaller hoop was basically an alley oop. I think this year’s dunk contest paved the way for a prop show in years to come.

  3. I gotta give Howard “props” on his win. The dunk contest was refreshing Green blowing out the candle cracked me up. Real not much to complain about except Ray not getting MVP and KG sitting out.

  4. I think Dwight Howard was going to win that contest no matter what happened. However, if you go dunk for dunk you’ll see that Howard’s first dunk attempt (which he missed) and his second one (which he hit) was considerably easier. Perhaps he got the crowd buzzed and then made the easier dunk.

The Superman dunk wasn’t a dunk, so…..I don’t know what you want to say about that. It was cool looking, but you could say that it shouldn’t have counted.

The Ping pong dunk was great and original.

The little ball big ball was kind of lame.

Green’s first dunk should have been a 50 by far.

    His second dunk was good.

    His third dunk was good.

And, his fourth dunk, which he did without shoes on was amazing and kind of scary. He should have gotten a fifty for that.

It’s a lot closer than you think and a lot closer than having that moron Kenny Smith yelling in my ear.

Can we just fire all of TNT?

  5. Bill I have to strongly disagree that his first dunk was the best. The left hand tap off the backboard was the most impressive dunk of the night. Howard was the clear winner, and deserved all the credit he was given… it’s just Gerald deserved more credit for his creativity.

  6. I forgot about the ping pong dunk, which was nasty and definitely deserved a 50. Perkisabeast is spot on–Dwight Howard would have won no matter what (perhaps to make up for last year), and he should have won, but Gerald should have gotten 50s for the birthday cake and the shoeless. Daryl Dawkins pushing Gerald’s shoes off the table was a dick move.

  7. I agree that showed no class I now hate Double D.

  8. I agree 100% with perkisabeast.

  9. Here’s the problem with the Gerald shoes-off dunk…

he had just done the same exact ‘between the legs’ dunk… only with a little variation.

ultimately… he had two dunks that looked VERY similar. That cost him points.
