The C’s have picked up 3 games on the Pistons during this 10 game winning streak of theirs. Which means that right now, they have a 5 1/2 game lead with 19 games to play. Orlando has a 4 1/2 game lead on Cleveland… and I don’t think the Cavs are in a position to make a run to make that up.
So the 1 through 4 seeds are virtually set. This means that the Celtics will get the tougher road to the finals… because we’ll get the winner of the Cleveland/Toronto series… and (theoretically) the Pistons… before taking on what the West has to offer. That won’t be easy.
The real battle in the East is for that 6th spot. No one wants to be 7th or 8th because that means a first round matchup against the Pistons or Celtics. Most teams probably feel better taking on Orlando than anyone else.
For what its worth… this doesn’t mean the Celtics can coast into the playoffs. Next week… we’re heading into Texas… for games at San Antonio, Houston, Dallas and New Orleans… and the West is already in full playoff mode. Remember… the Celtics have a 5 1/2 game lead over the 2nd seed Pistons. Its so crazy out West… the (ugh) Conference-leading Lakers have a 4 1/2 game lead over 8th seed Golden State.
