Awaiting the Birdman

Chris Andersen

Wooing free agents is more fun that I thought. Maybe because these guys actually want to play for the Celtics now. Chris “the Birdman” Andersen is reportedly coming to town today. He’s a slender 6-10 with tremendous potential. Should we care that he was suspended for two seasons for violating the league’s substance abuse policy? I don’t. But I don’t see how the Celtics can pay this guy more than $1-2 million per season, a number he’s sure to double or triple on the open market.

Ainge’s offer to Corey Maggette certainly has Celtics nation buzzing. And it looks like Corey is tired of losing:

“It’s not always about money,” Maggette said. “I’ve been in the league a long time and I’ve made a lot of money. I’m tired of losing. I want to get back to the playoffs and win.”

Nice try Corey, but I’m not buying it. Maybe if you were 3-4 years older. Go and get paid. There are still no specifics on the offers made to Maggette or James Posey. Marc Spears reports the Wizards are “very interested” in the Mongoose.

Not only is Danny busy with players, but he’s begun negotiating Doc Rivers’ exension. We’re guessing 3 more years at $7 million per. And Doc’s entire staff also needs new contracts.

  1. I’de rather have PJ or ZO. IF it aint broke dont fix it.

  2. Birdman can really play, and he’s younger, and he didn’t suffer a career-ending injury last season… if he’d come for vet’s min he’d be an absolute steal.

I figured out why Maggette has to be renounced, and Maggette can’t be sign-and-traded (except to a team under the cap, with room to absorb his salary). It’s because both he and Brand have cap holds until their situation is finalized. So if they’re 24 under the cap, Brand has a hold of 16 and Maggette 8 (let’s say). If they s-a-t Maggette to a team over the cap then they have to get back matching salary ~8 mil. If they do that then they’re 16 under the cap with Brand and Davis to sign, who aren’t going to split 16 mil.

They can s-a-t Maggette to Philly (if Philly’s interested) without matching salaries, and get back a future-1, then sign Brand/Davis, but Philly doesn’t have an incentive to s-a-t him for more than they can sign him outright, since they’d be bidding against themselves. The exception being that he can get a longer deal if he’s s-a-t’d. If he interests Philly is an extra contract year worth a future pick to them? I doubt it.

Net is: Clips renounce Maggette, re-sign Brand for less than his cap hold, resign Davis for up to the salary cap.
Maggette is “no one’s” free agent, and once Davis is signed GSW get a bundle of cap space.

  4. Anderson would provide the Celtics with unadulterated unsophisticated energy off the bench. The fans would probably love him because of his antics on the court and he’s a warrior around the basket – I say grab him. But I would be surprised if he left the team that was loyal to him during his idiot-phase.
