Josh Howard Hates America*

*UPDATE: In the original post I mistakenly identified Josh Howard as Josh Smith. I apologize to Smith.

Josh Howard – our favorite pot smoking player – is making headlines again, for all the wrong reasons. In the above YouTube video (scroll to the 1:40 mark), Smith says he doesn’t celebrate the national anthem. Here’s the exact quote:

“‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ is going on. I don’t celebrate this [expletive]. I’m black.”

We know your black, Josh. But I’m not sure why that’s an explanation for your comment. For the record, Smith makes millions of dollars playing a game in this crappy country.

For those wondering, Paul Pierce was the Celtics star who surprised some high school kids at Modell’s in Cambridge yesterday.

  1. What an asshole!

Before some readers jump on me for being some meat-eating, far right-wing neanderthal, let me clarify that I respect everyone’s right to say whatever they want about the United States of America. Just because I think this is the greatest country on Earth doesn’t mean Josh Smith isn’t entitled to his opinion. But this same Constitution that the government of this crappy country that the “Star Spangled Banner” represents is run under also allows me to call a spoiled hypocrite primadonna an “asshole” over the Internet. So there.

  2. Isn’t that Josh Howard? You might want to fix the headline.

I think what he said was ignorant as hell but he does have freedom of speech. Unfortunately, he is allowed to say stupid ish at any time, which he seems to be really good at.

I think that athletes (especially pot smoking All Stars) should learn to keep their mouth shut in public, even if it’s just someone’s camcorder or video phone. The chances are “high” that it will end up on YouTube at some point. When will they learn?

  3. You sure that’s Josh Smith?

  4. Josh Howard

  5. Yeah that was Howard

  6. Oops. I screwed up royally. If this was a real job, I would have been fired.

  7. Let’s be real here –

First, Josh Howard doesn’t have to acknowledge the National Anthem if he doesn’t want to. He can also burn a flag. Doesn’t mean he’s any less an American. I do not agree with his rationale that because he is black, he’s not going to celebrate the anthem. That just means he’s an idiot.

We’re free to be stupid in this country… and ignorant.

Second, what does Howard’s dopey reason for not participating in the National Anthem have to do with the Constitution, Athanacropolis? I don’t understand your point. Did Howard say, “I don’t believe in the Constitution because I’m black?”

  8. As a war vet, I invite him or anyone to burn a flag around me or disrespect the Anthem and just see what happens!!!!!!! as for DreinLA hug a tree, people died so Howard can make millions. What a total chud

  9. Disagree with Howard and Dre.

  10. His statement has nothing to do with the Constitution, Dre; I’m just saying that he has freedom of speech. I never said I believe he shouldn’t say what he said, even if I think it’s foolish, because the Constitution protects his right to say it.

  11. Jesteroo, thank you for your service. But you don’t have to lecture me about what people have done for this country. You don’t know me.

My father is a Vietnam veteran. He enlisted when he was 17, having only been in this country for a short time. He suffers from health issues as a result. He’s not offended by flag burning, people who don’t recite the Pledge of Allegiance, or acknowledge the National Anthem. He understands our Freedom of Speech.

You don’t need to tell me to hug a tree. You don’t know me. As far as you know, I could be a veteran myself… I could be a police officer… I could be a Republican. So before saying something incredibly ignorant, think first.

Tim, what about what I wrote do you disagree with? Howard being an idiot? Being free to be an idiot? Being an American nonetheless? That he doesn’t have a right to free speech? What?

  12. Howard is still an IDiot for obvious reasons & thats a fact. I think we can all agree on that.

  13. “First, Josh Howard doesn’t have to acknowledge the National Anthem if he doesn’t want to. He can also burn a flag. Doesn’t mean he’s any less an American.”

    That’s what I disagree with.

  14. But it’s a matter of opinion… so you can have yours, and I’ll have mine.

  15. Dre I’m to drunk to respond, Now go get your F-ing shine box
