Another One Bites The Dust

Merry Christmas Mo Cheeks.  What’s this in your stocking?  Oh… looks like a pink slip.

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—The Philadelphia 76ers have fired coach Maurice Cheeks with the team slumping at 9-14 a year after making the playoffs. Director of player personal Tony DiLeo becomes the interim coach.

The moves were confirmed Saturday by a person familiar with the decision who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because an announcement had not been made.

It’s a bloodbath this year in the NBA.  And you know what this means, right?  Tom Thibodeau is as good as gone next year.  There’s no way, especially when the C’s win it all again, that teams aren’t going to try to both add a Celtics strength while hurting the team at the same time.  There are too many vacancies… and he’ll be in high demand.

  1. I know coaching is a win or else business so I do not blame the 76ers but even as a Celtics fan who despises the Sixers I find it real hard to not like Maurice Cheeks.

  2. Agreed, always liked Mo Cheeks, from his playing days in Philly when I was growing up watching the C’s battle the Sixers. Sad to see Mo go, especially given his history with the team and he seems to be a nice guy…

  3. Does Thibs really have that jones to become a head coach and all the media blah that goes with it? I think as long as Wyc keeps him at 2mil + plus a year, he’d rather concentrate on coaching and avoiding the distractions of the limelight. Has anyone seen/heard an interview where he expresses a preference to be a head coach??
