Oh, China…

They’re really close to making Yi Jianlian an All Star game starter

Forwards: LeBron James (Clev) 1,521,272; Kevin Garnett (Bos) 1,101,541;
Yi Jianlian (NJ) 959,324;
Chris Bosh (Tor) 601,204; Paul Pierce (Bos)
387,105;
Hedo Turkoglu (Orl) 236,360; Shawn Marion (Mia) 230,119; Danny
Granger (Ind) 155,484; Josh Smith (Atl) 131,281; Michael Beasley (Mia)
121,632; Tayshaun Prince (Det) 114,869.

Ugh.  I know it’s just All Star voting and the game is meaningless.  But this is the first sign of alienating US fans at the expense of foreign markets.  I know China’s got a ton of money to spend on NBA merchandise, but the NBA’s main consumers are still here in the US.

This, in itself, is not a big deal.  I mean… who REALLY cares?  In the end, it’s a meaningless exhibition… and I’d kinda rather have our guys rest.  But EVERY other player on that list below Yi deserves to be above him.  Some guys have bonuses that depend on this stuff.

Besides… this gives people something easy to gripe about… and that’s never ideal for any business.

  1. I kind of disagree. As I stated over on TLN’s forums, this is garbage.

    I hate KG with all my guts! But Yi getting in over KG is garbage. This is pretty pathetic. The coaches should be able to veto something like this…

  2. This should not be allowed to happen. Period. This would just make a mockery of the All-Star game and disrespect everyone who actually deserves to be there. There are literally about a 100 players who could be there other than Yi.

    Absolutely ridiculous.

  3. If he makes it coaches only give him couple minutes, get out and vote if you don’t like it. Prince Beasley no thanks rather watch Yi.

  4. Prince Beasley? He’s not even going to come close to making the All-Star team so that’s an irrelevant notion.

    And I’m sure most of us HAVE voted (I know I have)…it’s a little tough to overcome an entire nation, though. Especially one where EVERYONE is voting for the same two people (Yao and Yi).

  5. Copy that at least he’s not injured. I used to hate Vince Carter getting to start every year, but that’s the way it is.

  6. I hear you on that, but at least Vince is an exciting player and he used to be All-Star caliber. Yi is neither an exciting player not All-Star caliber. He’s only been in the league for a year and half now.

  7. If he does make it the West All Stars will probally make him wish he never had.

  8. I know this sounds mean, but I hope the crowd makes him feel like he never had been voted to the game. He REALLY doesn’t deserve, in any way/shape/form, to be a part of this game. The Chinese basketball “fans” need to realize that true fans vote the best players into the game…the ones that deserve to be there.

  9. I don’t mind it. Fans choose the starters and pick the guys they want to see.

    It’s not that different from Kobe starting in the 1998 All-Star game when he wasn’t even starting for the Lakers.

    Yi is the guy the fans want to see.

    ….. My personal preference would be to have online votes weighted against votes cast at NBA venues, so that consumers who spend their money on game tickets and stuff like that get a bigger say in who starts. I think that would be a better option, but the present system doesn’t bother me much.

  10. The thing is, Yi isn’t the guy fans want to see. Like Vince, Kobe is/was an exciting player. The ONLY reason people in China are voting for him is because he’s Chinese. There is no basketball reason behind their voting. He’s not playing exceptionally well, he’s not an exciting player, he doesn’t deserve to be there. That’s what irks me.
