Potential Playoff Preview In Philly

If the playoffs were to begin today, Boston’s Eastern Conference Quarterfinal matchup would be tonight’s opponent, the Philadelphia 76ers. However, it is not set in stone. Chicago holds just a half-game advantage over the Sixers, and Philly has two games remaining on their regular season schedule (including tonight) while Chicago has just one. Therefore, there is a chance that Philly could win out and gain control of the sixth seed, which will square off with Orlando in the first round.

Now, when I say that there is a chance, I’m only speaking mathematically. The likeliness of Philly beating the Celtics tonight and handing Cleveland their second home loss of the season tomorrow is… well… it’s just not going to happen. To top that off, Chicago’s regular season finale is a more than winnable home game against the underwhelming 32-49 Toronto Raptors, who at this point are playing for nothing more or less than lottery odds.

Here’s where it gets interesting. Should Philly split their last two games while Chicago takes care of business in their finale, the Sixers and Bulls would tie for overall record (41-41), record against Eastern Conference teams (25-27), and wins against one another (2). If all of that transpires, the deciding factor would come down to winning percentage within each team’s respective division. Should that be the case, Chicago would control the rights to the sixth Eastern Conference seed, as they are currently 9-7 against Central Division teams while Philadelphia is just 6-9 against Atlantic Division clubs.

Or, we can forget everything above and just end the confusion tonight by racking up our sixty-first W of the season.

  1. Pierce ain’t playin either – via Comcast.

  2. In my opinion the Celtics need to win this game. It’s likely we could play them in the 1st Round so we can’t F’ Around and give the young 76ers confidence. We are coming off our worst loss of the season. Winning tonight and tomorrow night would bring nice momentum into the playoffs. As a fan I would like to get a win to dilute the bad taste out of my mouth from Sunday.

  3. Anyone besides me heading to the game on Saturday..?

  4. Celts are flat tonight. Sixers are pounding the paint and attacking rim. Are we just going to sit down and roll-over until Saturday? Guess so.

  5. Not good at all – We are looking like the 8th seed right now. Can we kick it up a notch and use an on off switch by Saturday. ?? What time is our game on Saturday? Anyone know?

  6. KWAPT… I should be there.

  7. Cool-come down to Section 17-1st row behind C’s basket-I’ll buy you a beer. I’ll have a 43/Perkins green shirt on.

  8. Shittt I will buy both you and Tim beers if I can make it back east from N. Cali. Sigh

  9. Still waiting on that 21st birthday so the beer might not work out…. but I’ll certainly drop by at some point.

  10. * Division records are only taken into account in the event of a tie breaker situation if the two teams are in the same division [i think]

…wouldn’t be fair to cut across divisions and hold them as a measuring stick, so instead they go straight to both teams records versus the eastern conference

  11. Oh please Tim – Hey, Kwapt get him a shot too

  12. Will do Santos!! Will do..

  13. Well, if you insist Santos.

  14. kobewearsapurplethong: I will also be at Game 1 on Saturday. I’ll be at Game 2 on Monday, too.
