Epic Battle

It was an epic battle of the point guards today. Derrick Rose shut me, and all my talk about a rookie wilting in the spotlight, up with 36 points and 11 assists in 50 minutes.  Rajon Rondo had 29 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists… but other than that, the Celtics flat out sucked offensively, and it cost them.  The Bulls take game 1, 105-103.

Ray Allen had his worst game of the season, scoring 4 points on 1-11 shooting.  Pierce was 8-20 for 23 points, but a lot of it came courtesy of a play we haven’t seen in a while (for good reason), Paul Pierce posting his guy up about 40 feet from the basket, then turning and making a 1-on-1 move.  Not to mention, Pierce had a chance to put the C’s up 1 with 2.6 seconds left and Chicago without any time outs, but he missed the free throw.

Chicago did a great job defending the basket.  They played with a ton more energy.  The Celtics played like crap.  Doc summed it up:

“There was no ball movement. It just looked like everybody decided that they were gonna be The Man tonight.”

I guess if you wanted to take an optimistic approach, the Bulls beat the Celtics by 2 in overtime… and it took a God-like performance from Derrick Rose and crappy performances from Ray Allen and Paul Pierce.  What are the odds that both of those things happen again?

  1. say bye to the champion

  2. it has only begun. hope this wakes them up.

    but; what to choke, wow!

Rondo is great in steals, poking the ball, but containing players one on one face to face, umm… no. not to mention guarding class one players like Rose. Put TA on him. Solved.

  3. Pierce was scared to shot the ball even when he had missmatches, and that lost ball when Hinrich poked it out of his hands…wow

    And Ray… wow#2

  4. celtics inside presence was a joke this game

  5. that said, i’m not worried

  6. If ray allen continues his post season suck fest the C’s may be better served to play tony and eddie

thats my overreaction to this game… moving on now

  7. It’s not that it was a joke, they literally had NO inside presence. Rondo better contain Rose in the next games or this is going to be a long series. The celtics looked so damn flat, had no fight in them. It was like they were thinkin yea yea yea the bulls will be easy and it bit them in the ass

  8. suck fest ahahaha hilarious phrase

well, we cannot afford either Paul or Ray to have anything like that if we wanna see more of the playoffs

  9. What a DISGUSTING game by the Cs. We deserved to lose.
    – Doc has officially LOST HIS FUCKING MIND. I could NOT believe that he put Ray back in the game with :30 to go in regulation… after Ray just spent the whole game DOING HIS BEST TO LOSE. Are you kidding me?!? And before that, he let him play 11 minutes of the 4th. Until he finally fouled Gordon on that jump shot to cap off his ridiculous performance.
    – Then, to prove he’s completely nuts, Doc puts Ray back in for OT! Wow. Mind-bogglingly stupid.
    – So Ray chooses the first game of the playoffs to have his WORST GAME OF THE SEASON?! WTF? How fitting that he should take the last shot and miss. (My opinion: put TA in for the 4th quarter forward. Don’t like TA? Use Eddie. Or Gabe. Or the fucking man on the moon. But you don’t leave ice cold brick-throwing Ray in there.)
    – Defense sucked.
    – Refs sucked. But if anything, their suckage HELPED us. Not their fault AT ALL that we lost.
    – And I am sick of watching Marbury already. I thought he’d shine eventually, but no way. Sick of him slowly bringing up the ball, never attacking, passing to the un-open man and waiting for Someone Else to make a play. Sick of him. At least Gabe PLAYS when he’s out there.
    – Rondo absolutely did as much as humanly possible to save this game. What a great player.
    – Just forget about KG. Doc could not have been clearer. HE IS NOT GOING TO PLAY. End of story. We don’t need KG to win. We need to SHOW UP. (Is his absence affecting the other guys? Maybe. If so, we’re fucked.)

Derrick Rose played like DWade today. He will be… and might already be… that good.

  10. What happened to the iso with Leon on Thomas? It worked three times in a row and then they never did it again. And if KG didn’t explode off the bench with 3 techs during a game played this poorly, I don’t know what they were worried about before.

  11. The help defense was very bad all game. Rondo looks bad defensively because nobody else ever cut Rose off when he got by him. Red’s right about the long odds of this happening four times. Garnett will hold Big Baby’s family hostage if that’s what it takes to get him to play defense.

  12. Seriously, there is no way you can guard a man one on one in the NBA, and keep him out of the lane, especially with a thousand picks being thrown at you. Thats why its called TEAM DEFENSE, which the Celtics didn’t play today. Big Baby, Leon and Mikki cannot defend the paint, and thats why Rose went off today. Perk can’t do it all on his own.

  13. Well, Celtic fans can be optimistic because the odds of Derrick Rose having another excellent game while Allen and Pierce have medicore ones are pretty low. At the same time, Bulls score at least 5-10 more points and will get more calls on their home court. So the Bulls just need Rose to handle the ball well, not necessarily score as much, during those home games.

The pressure is all on the Celtics now. If you look at this in a pessimistic view, Pierce and Allen have so many miles on their legs while the Bulls’ core are fresh and full of energy. 40 minutes for Salmons and Gordon isn’t as bad as 40 minutes for Pierce and Allen.

    Bulls in 6.

  14. Hey KG!!!

Man up and join your team on the bench. Sucks to be hurt and suck to be in street clothes, but it is a team and the team needs everyone to push for the wins.

  15. Can’t win a home playoff against the Bulls without KG, pathetic. A rookie destroyed your entire defense. lol even Tyrus Thomas was hittin j after j after in everybody’s grill. Are you kidding me, Tyrus Thomas? Weak. Hope you enjoyed that 1 ring because it’ll be another 22 years before u get another one. Might as well put your hopes in the Bruins and Red Sox because basketball season is over in Boston. Guess we’ll have to settle for the Cavs in the Finals, too bad.

  16. Lol im loving the article “Why the Bulls Have No Shot” now

  17. I thought the Celtics looked pathetic. No energy. No urgency. No nothing. They talked so much about everyone being wrong about counting them out and only did more to prove everyone’s point. I was extremely excited for this game and utterly disappointed with the lack of passion.

They looked like they wanted to be on the golf course even earlier. Rondo and Perk carried the team, carried the ALL-STARs in Ray and Paul for as long as they could and it wasn’t enough. They had plenty of opportunities to win the game, DESPITE themselves. They just stood taking jump shots. No ball movement. No slashing. Nothing. It was hard to watch, really.

I don’t think we’ve ever seen Ray shoot as poorly and as inaccurately as he did today. WAY OFF 3ptrs. It was ugly. I think that missed slam (overplaying) attempt was a bad omen of things to come for him. When does Ray slam? Never. Why did he try to today? I really expected him to turn it around in the second half but he was just invisible, almost a liability. FOUR POINTS? Ray Allen? Never would have thought. I hope it’s not a preview of Ray’s playoff performances of last season. I’m happy that he’s taking responsibility calling his performance “unacceptable.” Ray’s the man and has been all season. He’s won games for the C’s and I’m hoping to see the old Ray back next game.

Overall, it looked like a team of “woe is us” KG’s not here to help. They need to overcome it and get it out of their heads. KG’s not back for the playoffs. DONE DEAL! Show some fight for &*^$%%$ sake!

Celtics really have to turn things around if they want to make it to the next round.

  18. If this game had been on TNT, Kenny Smith would have said that the Celtics (excepting Rondo and the Beast) played like they had one foot on the plane to Bermuda.

Like the esteemed blogger, I don’t think they will play that way again.

    Still, that was painful.

  19. I was just as frustrated and disappointed as the rest of you on my way home. Shared many of the same reactions.

Then I realized…. the Bulls have to beat us 3 more times in order to win the series. That, won’t happen.

  20. You’ve gotta be kidding, DRJ. You wanted Doc to just quit on Ray and bench him because he was cold? Ray could go 0-99 and I would still want him out there to take the last shot.

While I don’t agree with Kenny Smith that the C’s are throwing in the towel, it did seem like they sleepwalked through the first half. I still have faith they’ll bounce back though.

  21. One more thing…

I was surprised that NOT even Joakim Noah’s intense screams after his slams lit a fire under the front court players. Clearly none of us are in the NBA, but if I’m playing and someone screaming in my face like that after every score, I’m taking it personally and making sure those easy looks don’t happen again. Noah was more intense than the entire Celtics team it seemed. That pretty much summed up the nonchalant energy that the Celtics were giving off the whole game.

Wasn’t expecting that. That needs to change ASAP.

  22. Really, was I surprised by the Celtics performance today? Not so much. Ray Allen’s choke fiesta jumpers was in affect today horrible Ray.

Pierce weird free throw release choke job was F’in Great.

Only Celtics player showed up was Rondo. He man’d up and went toe to toe with D. Rose. Rose played out of his F’in mind. (Props to him). It was almost like little man’s version epic battle between Bird and Wilkins.

Yea DRJ, how fitting was it that Ray ice cream Allen missed the last shot of the game. I would’ve set up a play for Perkins to shoot before I let Ray shoot today.

What are the odds of Pierce and Ray repeating this kind of performance? Not likely but it’s possible. I see this Baby Bulls team being fearless led by D. Rose. They are young, fearless, and energetic we don’t match up very well with this kind of team.

I am not writing off our beloved Celtics but the writing is on the wall already. We don’t have the championship swagger (Don’t think we had it since KG went down) and supporting cast is lacking the right ingredients for a title run.

Everyone can see and feel what I am saying. This might be a long series and I am not looking forward for the rest of it. I still think Celtics will save face and win in six or worst case scenario seven games.

*Hope Rondo’s ankle wasn’t twisted too badly or we’ll be really screwed with a 50% RR on Monday.

  23. I think I have given up hope on the both Moore and Marbury. Mikki gets more fouls than rebounds (Never a clean rebound) and Marbury just lacks aggressiveness. Crazy to say this but we need him to bring out some of that New York street ball aggressiveness. Maybe is too late now.

  24. come on.!!rose was throwing shit up and it was going in.!!

  25. How was the Call in show today guys? Any interesting callers and stuff to share?

  26. and they were trying to compare pierce to bird.?? i’m sorry pp..bird, hits the free throws.!!game over.!!

  27. fans are such *******

  28. Maybe this is just the wake-up call this team needed all along. Rose won’t play like this every game and the same goes for Ray Allen. The Celtics are still the favorites to win the series, but the home court advantage is gone…for now…

  29. DRJ… way off-based about Ray Allen.

  30. Mizzle – yes, I wanted to Doc to quit on Ray today, after he:
    – missed a wide open dunk
    – missed 11 out of 12 shots (many of which were total bricks)
    – fumbled a pass out of bounds
    – fouled Gordon on his jumper at a critical moment
    – seemed to be hiding in the hope of not having to touch the ball.

What’s a coach for if not to replace a player that ice-cold? ANYBODY he could have put in would have been better.

It’s possible KG’s absence has gotten into their heads, and that instead of stepping up to fight, they’re giving it up. Possible, tho I don’t think so. It will be very interesting to me to see if I was completely wrong about their spirit. If so, listen close…. the fat lady is singing.

  31. Tim–
I’m not saying Ray is bad. Far from it… he has been our best player this year. Hope he will be again. But his stinkage today was self-evident, I would think, to anyone who watched that game. It’s Doc’s job to replace players who are that bad.

  32. Paul wasn’t much better than ray.

More important missed free throws and DUMB turnovers form Paul have cost us close games than anything else, all year long.

  33. DRose is going to be a great player in this league for a long time. What poise for a rook in his 1st playoff game. I was sitting pretty close to the floor and it seemed the interior D turned it on too late. They should’ve sent a message to Rose early on that he would pay for coming down low. That, Ray’s tough shooting day and a combination of some bad calls/missed free-throws/turnovers cost us this one. Where the F was KG in the 2nd half? If I am frustrated at work, I can’t just walk out in the middle of the day and leave my coworkers to fend for themselves. Put your feelings aside KG and stick around next time. Your presence is huge even if you don’t play. I hate to go here, but isn’t Brotherhood about sticking by your brothers even when you don’t want to….? Rose will need to be contained or this will be a short series. If you give that kid room to drive the lane, it’s a dunk or layup all the time.

  34. My take is simply that there is no way this game will be duplicated.

The Celtics will no way play that bad and the Bulls will no way play that good again. No way. It’s damn near impossible.

I haven’t even checked the comments waiting to be moderated… can’t wait to see how many idiot Bulls fans there are in there.

  35. I picked one helluva game to miss. As depressed as I am, no way Ray scores just 4 points in any other game. Then again, we were saying that last year for the first two rounds.

A lot of Laker fools have posted junk in the comments. They are still jealous of last year’s success (at their expense) and I think they want us to lose more than they want LA to win.

  36. Bulls are dangerous. Celtics must play with more urgency. Great game to watch except the outcome stinks. Ray is still the best shooter in the league all great shooters have these days, lets hope its only 1 game. Tyrus was way out of his range on that last jumper, if the Celtics can force those type of shots we will win.

  37. Please spare us the trolls if you can…

  38. We had never lost a game to the Bulls in the playoffs, not even against Jordan… the game was shameful, an upset is on the way if they don’t change their minds quickly. More than the poor percentages I hated the team attitude, it seemed like the C’s didn’t care about playing D or with intensity… that was horrible.

  39. On the bright side, I met JoJo White at the Garden…

In all seriousness, that was one hell of a game to be at. The outcome could have been better for me personally, but that game was ridiculously intense.

Rose vs. Rondo was awesome to watch, and I think it’ll be one of the more exciting matchups to follow for a long time. Rondo was brilliant, but Rose took that game over and showed why he was the #1 pick last June. He has the “it factor,” that’s for sure.

I thought Kirk Hinrich’s defensive pressure changed the game, as well. Even when he was on the much bigger Pierce, he made plays and got Pierce flustered. He bothered Ray. He even slowed down Rondo for a small stretch. Hinrich didn’t score much, but I think he was the second most important player on the floor for Chicago.

Tough loss, but it isn’t time to panic just yet. We can bounce back in Game 2 and hopefully steal home court advantage back by splitting in Chicago as well. We’ll see what happens. All I know is that if we are going to have any kind of chance at advancing, Ray Allen needs to be a factor. A huge factor. I’m confident that he will, but he’s off to a rough start.

  40. Not worried… Just a little, The C’s still got this!

  41. Thanks CelticBalla… good points. They actually did play with some energy, falling on loose balls and such. They just don’t do well against young, highly energetic teams… especially if the other guys also play aggressive D. And… we just can’t win with Paul AWOL for 1/2 game and Ray missing (yet still allowed to continue playing in) the entire game. Add to that a weak defensive effort and no ball movement on offense, and it’s a wonder the game was close at all.

    Game 2 will be key.

  42. Epic Fail..

As good as rondo was, he was outplayed. plain and simple….ray allen does it again, really a pathetic, embarrassing display from him today, and pp missing a clutch free throw? no excuse for that…rookie rose was 12-12…

we got dominated by joke noah and tyrus fucking thomas…what the fuck? seriously, so much for being proud of this if they lose in the first round to the bulls….I wont be proud of them but ashamed of them

  43. What’s the story with Barstool? They boot you from the blog and then rip-off your posts? Yeah, they cited but no link? That is beat.

Anyways, The Cs will turn it around, no doubt. They will beat the Bulls and I think they have a strong chance to beat the Magic. In fact, I’m going to go ahead and tout the theory that we are going to lose some games “intentionally” in order to drag each series to 7 games so that we can try and get KG back for the Cavs. Hah. Dare to dream.

  44. Baron: typical bandwagon-like comment. Ashamed of the team when the lose, but I’m willing to bet that you promote yourself as the “biggest Celtics fan” when they’re winning.

A real fan sticks with the team through thick and thin. Everybody that truly felt magic in their hearts and souls last year know exactly what I’m talking about. The others have no clue.

The sky hasn’t fallen, people. Hell, if you want a recent example, the 2001 Sixers stole Game 1 at Staples in the NBA Finals. The Lakers, who were the better team just as the Celtics are better than the Bulls, came back to win the next four games.

One loss doesn’t define the series. Four do. Until that happens, we’ve got just as good a shot to take this series as Chicago. In fact, we should still be favored.

    Relax, folks.

  45. Balla32, Baron is a real fan just got over emotional and it was a frustrated comment and he is no frontrunner just tough love for the team. He can sleep it off and feel better tomorrow just like most of us.

You are more understanding and is more mathematical and logical fan. Thanks for calming some of us down today.

The Celtics really need to bounce back with vengeance and play with major urgency on Monday. If we don’t play with more heart then it ain’t going to be pretty. The Baby Bulls aren’t Babies anymore they can be called the Teenage Bulls after today’s win.

  46. I also made that comment, without knowing who I was talking to, in the heat of the moment because I was frustrated with the negativity from so many Celtics fans on the internet. When we lose, “the negativity in this town sucks.” I just don’t like the way some New England/Boston fans react to things. They look at it as: we either “suck” or are “number one!” And if we’re in “number one!” mode and happen to lose a game in the middle of a big run, we only lost because of the officials. It’s never the team’s fault…

So, I do apologize to Baron for throwing him under the bus in the pink hat category. It’s just the way his comment came off, and the way so many people are reacting about this one loss.

  47. the heck with KG, BRING BACK LUCKY!!!

  48. I totally understand where you are coming from B32. You have to understand Celtics fans were fed daily with Mcdonalds $1 menu for 22 years and last year they fed us five star gourmet meals, dessert and alcohol. So, now most of us are sounding off because we don’t want to settle for anything less.

Just like the Patriots and Red Sox have fed the fans in New England. I am not from the area but I understand. I am from Northern California where the Warriors is the hometown team. Their fans treat them like champs every single year and have sold out crowds at every home game. They haven’t even tasted or sniffed title success in decades but they buy into it everything and support their team. I guess that’s the flip side of things but in Boston we’ve all been spoiled since Russell won 11 titles and the Bird era with more bling bling. I guess Cetlics fans are spoiled to a point. We can’t handle losing like other franchises because its tough love with the Celtics. Only Championship Banners go up to the rafters and that’s the only thing we expect. I guess you are right and it ain’t going to change – we either suck or we are number 1.

  49. Baron speaks truth, though sometimes wrapped in hyperbole. Take away his last sentence… which is more feeling than statement… and you are hard-pressed to find anything untrue.

This was a very frustrating game, for reasons enumerated above. And though I still believe, I am less sanguine than you, CelticBalla, after today’s experience.

Game 2 will tell us most of what we want to know.

At least we didn’t have to put up with the trolls. We’ve had a hard three days…

  50. Maybe John and Chuck have been blocking out the trolls. I don’t believe they’ll be this quiet.

  51. Yes, they have.

  52. Lakers or Cavs. Who do you want to pass it on to? Do you really want to see it lost to an Eastern team?

  53. Neither!

  54. Amazing. You lose one game in a seven game series and the world is falling apart. I’m not even a Celtics fan and think they’ll bounce back.

  55. Oh and btw this wasn’t a godlike performance from rose, he plays the same game every night except the defense in this one was particularly horrible. Remarkably consistent for a rookie.

  56. Hey, Celticballa, shut the f-up, and get off your high horse where you think youre a better fan then someone else. you son of a bitch.

I never said anything about giving up on the team, I said I was disappointed in there performance, and even ray called it unacceptable. it was a joke. Im not going to sit here and give credit where it isnt due…if they lose in the first round, am I suppose to be proud? f-off

  57. Uncle Leo, this was the best game of derrick roses career. including a career high in points, dont come in here saying this performace wasnt out of the ordinary for him…thats ridicoulous.

  58. Rose is that good so relax.
