We’ll See Yi Tonight
July 11, 2007

Yi JianlianTonight is our first chance to see if Yi Jianlian has the skills that would have helped the Boston Celtics.  Judging from the early returns though, Yi had a better time practicing against the furniture.

Yi went into last night’s game against the Knicks shooting 20%… then shot 0-6 to finish with 3  points and 9 fouls.  He’s not the only one struggling in Vegas, though.  Greg Oden was a mess… but he’s getting his tonsils out… so he’s done for the summer.  And Kevin Durant is putting up Iverson-esque shooting numbers

The lesson… as we’ve been trying to tell you… summer league doesn’t mean crap.  Still you can watch Yi play and maybe we can pick something out of his performance.  Game time is 10pm eastern.

The only real item of note regarding the Celtics today is the revelation of the obvious:  Wyc Grousbeck blew any chances of a Sebastian Telfair trade by pulling the the whole “nameplate off the locker” stunt:

Multiple sources confirmed that the Celtics agreed at the end of the season to trade Telfair. With Rajon Rondo planted at the point, Telfair wanted to start over with a better opportunity – and the C’s were more than willing to give it to him.

But then came Telfair’s April arrest for gun possession and driving with a suspended license, and more importantly, co-owner Wyc Grousbeck’s announcement that his nameplate would be removed from his locker.

“That really hurt (director of basketball operations Danny) Ainge’s chances of trading him for anything decent,” a league source said.

When will owners learn?  You DON’T get publically involved in the day-to-day running of the team.  Wyc seems like a nice enough guy.  He’s at the games… he’s excited about things… but running a team is like playing poker.  If you let everyone know you’d love to fold… you can’t try to bluff your way to winning the pot later… because everyone knows to call your bluff.  What’s worse… other GM’s now know that Wyc has zero patience for someone who has a brush with the law.  Now the next time a guy gets in trouble… other teams will offer us much less than the actual value of that player.   Danny sucks enough as it is when it comes to trades… you don’t need to make it any harder for him.

For you people curious about salary numbers:  The 2007-08 salary cap will be $55,630,000.  The mid-level exception will be $5,356,000.  The luxury tax threshold will  be $67,865,000.  The Celtics payroll is currently $63,147,632.  We know that Wyc doesn’t want to pay the luxury tax… which is dollar for dollar (every dollar you’re over the threshhold, you pay that same amount in luxury taxes).  That means the C’s have $4.7 million to spend before hitting that threshold.  Just something to consider when you’re looking at potential free agents.

Time To Get Some Run
July 6, 2007

That means play basketball.  Sorry if the headline threw you.  Sometimes I revert back to my street-ballin days.  It was sort of like the And1 mix tape stuff you see… except with none of that fancy dribbling… or dunking… or consistent shooting.  But man… I had a mean set-shot.  The only problem is that sometimes my goggles would fog-up and I’d have to sit out a couple of points.

greg oden Anyhoo…

The boys are playing basketball tonight in Vegas (I hope they’ve got AC… it’s like 200 degrees out there).  It’s everyone’s first chance to see Greg Oden play against NBA talent…. if you can call Lance Allred and Andreas Glyniadakis “NBA talent.”

Maybe Big Baby and Leon Powe can give him the ol’ Malachi Crunch.  That’ll show those ping pong balls to bounce Portland’s way.

We’ll be watching the game if you can’t… and we’ll let you know how it went.  Remember… our call in show is tomorrow at 10:30 am.  It’ll be an hour long show focusing on what have become the main topics of the week:  the beginning of the Summer League, Sebastian Telfair’s possible return to the C’s, and the next move Danny will make (because he keeps saying he’s going to make one)

Road To Redemption?
July 5, 2007

sebastian telfairThe Sebastian Telfair that existed before April 20, 2007 was a guy caught up perceptions and expectations.  The hype surrounding his jump to the NBA made everyone think he was going to be a superstar.  The people he grew up with expected him to act and carry himself a certain way.  Then came April 20… when he got pulled over and busted for driving with a suspended license.  Police also found a gun in his car.  Telfair tells Steve Bulpett… that incident opened his eyes:

“It may sound strange, but I’m happy that it happened to me. I understand that I should never ever put myself in a situation or position to jeopardize what I love to do. I think the biggest thing I learned from it is it’s not only me I’m hurting when something like that happens. I’m hurting a lot of people — my team, the organization and my family.”

Telfair went on to say more of the right things:

“It’s very tough,” he said. “But you have to realize that it’s not arrogant or cocky to realize that you’re different. I mean, you’re still a human being, but at the end of the day you’re different because of what you have and what you’ve achieved. Some people will see that and not really like how it sounds, but it’s reality and I know it now. I understand that. When you understand that, you’ll be on the path you’re supposed to be on. You don’t need to be going on anybody else’s path. You don’t ever forget your friends, but part of your life is just different.”

At this point, we don’t know if this is just talk, or an actual turnaround.  He’s working out with the C’s in Vegas, but he’s not slated to show up in any summer league games.  If he does, then you know the Celtics believe what he’s saying.  If he truly has committed himself to getting better as a player and as a person… if he truly has committed himself to staying out of trouble… then I think the Celtics and their fans should give him one more chance.  But if he screws up one more time… then it makes everything else worse… because then everything that came out today is one big lie.

This might just be a topic on our call in show this Saturday morning.  We’re going for an hour starting at 10:30 am.  The Celtics play Greg Oden and the Trailblazers Friday night at 10pm… so you can watch that, wake up, and call in to our show.

Don’t Push Your Luck
July 1, 2007

trader danny and his storeWe all know Danny Ainge’s reputation.  He’s pretty good in the draft… pretty bad at trading.  It’s why Rajon Rondo is working out well… and Sebastian Telfair isn’t.  It’s why people are afraid of the Ray Allen deal… and why Gabe Pruitt will probably do surprisingly well.

But you guys know we’re on record as liking the Ray Allen deal.  Which is why I say today… Don’t push your luck Danny.  However, Mark Murphy tells us today that Danny is already exploring every sign-and-trade possibility out there:

After parting with the No. 5 pick, Delonte West and Wally Szczerbiak to land Allen, the C’s may not even have enough to make a deal work for a quality minor star like Charlotte’s Gerald Wallace.  But Ainge has long been known to kick every tire on the lot, and he will be out there until the late hours this summer, too.

I just don’t like the sound of that because I’m starting to like this team.  People have been buzzing about making a deal for Denver’s Marcus Camby… who is built out of paper mache’… but who know’s what Danny is thinking.  All I know is it’s July 1st… and it’s time to let the rumors fly.  This is actually good news for us… because it sounds like we’ll have story lines to cover this summer.

#20 ray allen jerseyThe Celtics haven’t wasted any time getting Ray Allen’s #20 jersey up for sale.  You can buy one for the low, low price of $44.95.  I’d hold off, though.  You never know what Danny has up his sleeve.

Here’s one for loyal reader Tim… a.k.a “Fire Doc”:  The door is apparently being left open for a reconciliation with Sebastian Telfair… and he might be taking advantage of it.  I’ve bashed him a lot… Chuck has killed him… but I’d love for Bassy to prove us both wrong.  I’ll hapilly eat crow if he turns things around.

Hey… if you want the best WNBA coverage in town… go over to the Globe.  If you want Celtics coverage… skip it.  This is all you’re getting:  Peter May going way out on a limb and proclaiming the Blazers and Sonics winners on draft night.  Jeez guys… give us some effort, huh?  I know blogs are rising up and challenging conventional media… but give us a fight.  The Herald is at least trying.

Blockbuster Deal In The Works??
June 25, 2007

You want a blockbuster deal to kick off the NBA offseason?  Here it is:

The Los Angeles Times cited league sources on Monday saying that the Lakers and Minnesota Timberwolves are in discussions that could bring Kevin Garnett to Los Angeles.

Trade discussions have involved the Lakers, Wolves, Pacers and possibly a fourth team. The report says that the Lakers would get Garnett, while the Pacers would land Los Angeles forward Lamar Odom and center Andrew Bynum. The Wolves would likely acquire a lottery pick and young players. Another team would also have to be involved to make the deal work financially.

Hmmm… a 4th team.  Well… we are a Celtics site after all.  Enter Chad Ford and this bit of speculation

After speaking with a league source, I think the deal has some legs, though it doesn’t appear imminent.

According to the source, the key to completing the deal is finding a fourth team that would (a) take Jermaine O’Neal and (b) send the Timberwolves enough pieces to complete the deal.

For instance, here’s one scenario that could work:

The Wolves send Kevin Garnett and Marko Jaric to the Lakers.

The Lakers send Lamar Odom and Andrew Bynum to the Pacers and the No. 19 pick to the Wolves.

The Pacers send Jermaine O’Neal to the Celtics.

The Celtics send the No. 5 pick, Theo Ratliff, Gerald Green and Sebastian Telfair to Minnesota.

So in essence… the Celtics would trade Theo, #5, Gerald and Telfair for Jermaine O’Neal.

Sign…  Me… Up!

Danny Is Kidding, Right?
June 13, 2007

Sebastian Telfair in a Celtics hatOk… I might be hallucinating because I ate, like, a bazillion buffalo wings last night… but I could swear that Danny Ainge told the Herald that Sebastian Telfair might stick with the Celtics.

“You know, sometimes these kinds of things are exactly what guys need to happen. I understand the frustration from ownership, from management, from coaches. I understand the frustration when Sebastian got in trouble this time, but it might just be what Sebastian needed.”

And what I need is a gallon of Pepto Bismol. What this really is… is some posturing on Danny’s part: “oh… we love Bassy… he just made a mistake or two… what? You want him in a deal? I couldn’t… well… ok”
