Theo: “As Strong As Ever.”
July 18, 2007

I know it’s only July and there is still plenty of time for Theo Ratliff to get injured, but the big man told the Globe’s Shira Springer (Yes, they actually reported on the Celtics) he’s ready to go.

“I’ve been working out, working with a personal trainer, working out hard four or five times a week. I’ve been able to play a little bit. It was unfortunate I couldn’t do things last year. I’m looking forward to next season. Of course, I will be able to participate in training camp.”

Put me in the “I’ll believe it when I see it” camp.

Around the NBA, Stephon Marbury says he’s going to play in Italy when his Knicks contract expires in two years. Why wait? Yi continues to dick around the Milwaukee Bucks…. now he has the Chinese national team on his side. And Kevin Durant spurns Adidas for Nike….Imagine getting $70 million to wear sneakers!

Yeah… Win Now
June 30, 2007

Danny AingeI don’t know what’s wrong with people.  Honestly.  I’m starting to think that these writers are being fed lead paint chips in the break room.  What’s setting me off now?  Mark Murphy’s piece in today’s Herald.

in trading away the fifth pick in a very deep draft last night – along with Delonte West and Wally Szczerbiak (who filled the double ankle surgery matching requirement) – the Celtics just shortened their window.    Any shorter and they’ll bruise their fingers when the gap closes.

Do you have a problem with the Celtics winning now?  Because I don’t.   This is Danny’s 5th year of running the team.  How much longer are we going to give him?  Yes Danny… WIN NOW!   My favorite part of this all is the revisionist history.  Two months ago, the Celtics were too young, it was taking too long, we had too many players and they were mostly overvalued by Danny and the C’s.  Now we trade one of those young kids and a draft pick for Ray and we’re an “old team” that “suddenly needs to win now”.

Here’s most important thing:  I did not hear anyone in March, after seeing all these guys in the NCAA tourney, say “wow… if we don’t get Oden or Durant… I’d be happy with Corey Brewer, Jeff Green, Joakim Noah, Al Horford, Brandan Wright or Al Thornton.”  No… everyone was writing and saying that it was Oden… Durant… or trade the pick.  What happened here?  Were people swayed by the workouts?  If that’s the case, then you’d better not EVER write about how a GM got duped by a “workout wonder.”

So yeah… Danny needs to win now.  Because I’m sick of waiting.  He’s lucky he’s even getting a 5 year plan.  And let me tell you one thing: 1986 was a LOOONG time ago.

Here’s some negative reaction to the Allen deal from John Hollinger and Bill Simmonsbut Ian Thomsen likes it

Also today (and I’ll make it quick this time): Theo Ratliff is more than just a name on a big contract.  He’s a person…. who hopes to play basketball:

“Theo can still help us. He and Perk together could really help us under the basket. Theo has been working extremely hard. He believes that he can be healthy, and I think this is going to be an important year for him, because he has a chance to earn a new contract.”

Well… that would be a nice surprise.  Shira Springer says Danny isn’t done dealing… because we can’t be a huge player in the free agent market.  And uh… what’s up with Sebastian Telfair?

Jaric Snags KG Deal & Bar Set For Al’s Contract
June 21, 2007

Three big updates for you.

One comes courtesy of Jessica Camerato of Hoopsworld:

The deal to move Garnett to Boston would include Al Jefferson and the fifth pick, and now the Timberwolves want to ship out Marko Jaric and attain Gerald Green. The Celtics are pushing back on Jaric, who has four years left on his $40 million contract.

Meanwhile, Twin Cities has 3 way deal involving Shawn Marion:

Expanded Timberwolves trade rumor: Kevin Garnett to the Phoenix Suns as part of a three-way deal with the Boston Celtics that would bring the Wolves 6-9 Kurt Thomas from Phoenix and 6-10 Theo Ratliff from Boston, both of whom have contracts that expire after next season. The Suns would send forward Shawn Marion to the Celtics, who would send guard Sebastian Telfair to the Wolves.

The Wolves would get the Celtics’ No. 5 overall pick and the Suns’ No. 24 overall pick in next week’s NBA draft, and keep their No. 7 overall pick. In addition, the second-round conditional pick they owe Boston in the Ricky Davis-Wally Szczerbiak deal would be eliminated.

And finally… in a deal that directly affects what Al Jefferson is going to ask for when it comes to an extension… the Orlando Sentinel says Dwight Howard is about to get very rich:

Very little negotiating will be necessary before Howard signs a five-year contract extension that could be worth an estimated $85 million, serving as the long-term centerpiece for the franchise.

That’s $17 Mil. per year people.  Al Jefferson and Dwight Howard put up almost identical numbers at the end of last season.  If you don’t think Al is going ask for that… or close… you’re nuts.
